Job Description

Social Worker – Children & Families Assessment Team – Somerset Council

Somerset Council is seeking a dedicated and experienced Social Worker to join the Children & Families Assessment Team at the Mendip Hub. This role focuses on building strong relationships with children and families to complete high-quality assessments and deliver tailored interventions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload of varying complexity, undertaking child and family assessments under statutory frameworks.
  • Identify needs, risks, strengths, and protective factors to develop child-centred plans that promote safety and wellbeing.
  • Respond to referrals and participate in the team’s duty rota, including crisis interventions where required.
  • Empower children, families, and carers to achieve sustainable change by addressing barriers to their health, financial, emotional, and social wellbeing.
  • Work closely with multi-agency partners and internal services to ensure holistic support for families.

Essential Requirements:

  • Qualified Social Worker (QSW) with Social Work England registration.
  • Experience working within children and families services, ideally within assessment teams.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding frameworks and multi-agency working.
  • Excellent communication, assessment, and crisis intervention skills.
  • A commitment to relationship-based social work and creative practice.

Additional Information:

  • Office base: Mendip Hub, Shepton Mallet.
  • The role also covers families in Wells, Glastonbury, Castle Cary, Wincanton, and Frome.
  • Full-time: 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 17:00).
  • Inside IR35.
